A documentary film that premiered Monday tells the stories of ten women from different areas of Brazil that had their lives impacted by dam failures and found a way to cope with the tragedy through the Chilean embroidery of arpilleras.

Produced by the Movement of People Affected by Dam (MAB), “Arpilleras: Affected by Dams, Embroidering Resistance” premiered online on Monday, and was also a way to honor a MAB coordinator who was brutally tortured and murdered a month ago Monday. Dilma Ferreira Silva, her partner, Claudionor Costa Silva and their neighbor Milton Lopes were assassinated in Pará state, nothern Brazil.

According to the Pastoral Land Commission (T), Silva is the first land activist to be killed in the Brazilian Amazon in 2019.

“Born in Maranhão state, 47 seven years of age, affected by a dam, a fighter of the people, a member of the national coordination of the Movement of People Affected by Dams, brutally murdered, Dilma Ferreira Silva will be ed by her comrades as a brave fighter in the moments of struggle, but also a really fun person to be around. She is survived by a 23-year-old daughter who is not living in Pará state,” the MAB said about the political activist.
