During his visit to Brazil, Emmanuel Macron, the President of , expressed his critical stance regarding the ongoing negotiations between Mercosur and the European Union. At a meeting with Brazilian entrepreneurs and ministers in São Paulo, Macron criticized the current agreement, negotiated over 20 years ago, as inadequate. He highlighted his deep concern for the environment and stressed the need for a new deal—one that is more responsible and takes into reciprocity and environmental considerations.
Macron says the current negotiations render the Mercosur agreement a "poor deal." He stressed the importance of constructing a new one that is aligned with current realities. Macron's participation in the Brazil- Economic Forum, held at the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp), marked the initial commitment of his visit to Brazil. He is scheduled to meet again with former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brasília.
Macron's position diverges from that of the Brazilian government. Vice president Geraldo Alckmin had previously defended the agreement, highlighting the benefits of expanding Mercosur and opening up markets. Finance Minister Fernando Haddad ed the deal, affirming that President Lula would persist in pursuing it.
Haddad compared the efforts to establish an agreement between Mercosur and the European Union to tax reform. He pointed out that if Brazil could approve tax reform last year after 40 years of deliberation, finalizing a trade agreement between the blocs within two decades is also feasible. Haddad emphasized that Brazil's 40-year journey to tax reform ultimately ended the tax chaos.
Lula and Macron announce agreement to build a nuclear submarine to 'guarantee peace'
In Rio de Janeiro, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and French leader Emmanuel Macron announced a partnership between Brazil and for the construction of a nuclear-powered submarine. Lula emphasized that the goal is to ensure peace, not war, and that this cooperation will enable both countries to tackle global challenges together.
"Tell the French that Brazil seeks nuclear technology knowledge, not for war, but to stand alongside countries that desire peace", said Lulas. The presidents witnessed the launch of the Tonelero submarine at the Itaguaí military complex in Rio de Janeiro.
This marks the third submarine produced under the bilateral cooperation agreement. The fourth submarine is scheduled for launch next year, after the partnership to construct Brazil's first nuclear-powered submarine.
Macron stated that this partnership represents an "unparalleled transfer of technologies" for . He proudly emphasized the extensive knowledge sharing with Brazil. Beyond industrial collaboration, this bilateral relationship is classified as a "balanced strategic partnership," with nuclear technology exchange marking a "new chapter" in their strategy.
